Even better, as are diskettes, CD-Rs are very
universal and generally can be read on most standard CD-ROM
drives.
So what’s the downside of the CD-RW Drive ?
Even with up to 700MB of capacity, CD-RW backup
systems are virtually inadequate for full system backup requirements
of even today’s entry-level PCs, which generally include 20GB or
40GB hard drives.
So, at best, you could use CD-R or CD-RW media
to backup data files but generally not programs.
However, most small businesses tend to have
substantially more than 700MB of data files, even with just a
handful of users. So even if you were to automate the backup of
select data files to CD-R or CD-RW media, it’s highly unlikely
that 700MB of backup capacity would be adequate for the long term,
even for a one- or two-person company.
And, if your backup system relies on switching
out media during the backup process, it’s unlikely the backup
process will be carried out persistently as needed.
All things considered, a CD-RW based backup
system only can be used for extremely small microbusinesses,
with unusually small data file storage requirements.
