Microsoft Office Tutorial

Use the Detect and Repair feature to prevent expensive technical support and computer consultant service calls.

First introduced in Microsoft Office 2000, the Detect and Repair command on the Help pull-down menu (Figure 3-8) automatically fixes both file and Registry-level problems with Microsoft Office applications.

Note:
The Registry is a hierarchical database used to store configuration information for user preferences, installed hardware, operating system configuration choices and software application settings. Every version of Microsoft Windows since Microsoft Windows 95 relies on a Registry. Because the Registry is like the central nervous system of software, you must make sure it is backed up regularly.

Use the Microsoft Office Detect and Repair feature to attempt to correct technical glitches on your own, before spending money to call for technical support or your local computer consultant.

A cornerstone of Microsoft’s self-repairing, self-healing benefits powered by the Windows Installer Service, Detect and Repair automatically searches for missing or corrupted files and then automatically repairs them.

When you run Detect and Repair, you’ll usually be asked to insert the appropriate Microsoft Office CD-ROM. Even so, the huge leap forward here is that there’s almost no need for complex, manual troubleshooting.

Note:
Keep track of which Microsoft Office CD-ROM you used for each installation. Aside from needing to manage this in excruciating detail for software licensing purposes, any Detect and Repair operations or patches you apply to Microsoft Office may fail, if you don’t have the original CD-ROM available.

Microsoft Office Tutorial Action Items

Is your internal systems administrator (internal guru) trained on how to use the Detect and Repair feature in Microsoft Office?

Since you'll need installation media for Detect and Repair operations, how do you manage and track which Microsoft Office CD-ROMs were used for which desktop PC and notebook software installations?

Do you keep the Microsoft Office installation CD-ROMs locked up in one central location? What about the crucial unlock keys required for reinstallation?
