Windows Upgrades

Why operating system upgrades (specifically Microsoft Windows upgrades) often take several hours

Are you still feeling brave enough to handle an operating system upgrade on your own, instead of getting the operating system factory installed on a new PC?

Every once in a while, you may get lucky and be able to complete a Microsoft Windows version upgrade in an hour or two. But don’t count on it.

Consider some of the more common tasks that go into this kind of project.

·         Backing up all data and making sure the backup is verified and tested.

·         Inventorying all key software applications and hardware devices, then researching whether they’re supposed to work under the new desired operating system.

·         Tracking down and purchasing or downloading any required software applications, device drivers and firmware upgrades.

·         Deciding whether to perform a clean installation, where you reformat the hard drive and start from scratch, or an in-place installation where you install the new version of Microsoft Windows on top of the old one. (A clean installation is generally preferable but typically more time-consuming than an in-place installation.)

·         Installing the operating system.

·         Reinstalling or reconfiguring software applications and hardware components.

·         Migrating user data and preferences.

These are just some of the reasons you should have your PC manufacturer worry about many of these headaches before your PC leaves the factory.
