Computer Hardware Components

Don't buy computer hardware components on your own if you can get a comparable or better deal from your PC vendor.

How can PC vendors afford to include all these bundled computer hardware components for so little money?

Consider the sheer economies of scale. You go down to the local warehouse club or office supply superstore to buy a few Ethernet network adapters. You pay a respectable price and get the product in a pretty package with a full-color box, installation guide, installation media and a vague promise of vendor technical support.

Now consider a purchasing manager for a huge PC vendor such as Compaq or Dell. The purchasing manager approaches that same manufacturer of Ethernet network adapters and negotiates a volume price for procuring 100,000 or more of these every month. And by the way, the Ethernet network adapter manufacturer won’t need to supply fancy retail, shrink-wrapped boxes, installation guides or media. And the huge PC vendor will provide all the technical support.

Quite obviously, the giant PC vendor will get a much better deal than you or I could ever hope for at the retail, or even “perceived” wholesale level. Now extrapolate the discussion out to monitors, hard drives, RAM, operating systems, software applications and more, and you begin to see how the huge PC vendors can include these bundled items for such a low incremental cost.

So take advantage of as many of these bundled product offers as you possibly can. They tend to be fabulous values.

Action Items

Are you aware of the different hardware options that can be bundled with your PC at the time of purchase?

Have you done your homework to figure out which hardware options are great deals and which are just average deals?

When considering hardware component options with the purchase of a new PC, do you consider both soft costs and out-of-pocket expenses?

Does your PC vendor also offer bundled options for operating systems, office automation software and utility programs?
