If your CFO spends most of a typical day
crunching numbers in Microsoft Excel spreadsheets and communicating
via e-mail in Microsoft Outlook, he or she really has very basic PC
requirements.
Notebook Gadget Black Holes
Pay particular attention to notebooks. You can
get some really useful multimedia features in high-end notebooks in
the $4,000 to $5,000 price range.
But if the owner of the company merely wants to
access e-mail remotely, you easily could equip him or her
with a reliable, high-performance, brand-name notebook for one-third
to one-half of that price range.
Don’t allow your objective judgment and technology budget to get
seduced by superfluous bells and whistles.
Action Items
Are
there any VIPs who get preferential treatment when it comes to
selecting the desktop PC or notebook hardware, regardless of
actual software requirements?
Are
these VIPs aware that your company is spending substantially more
than is necessary on their PC hardware? Is there a more
cost-effective or rational way to make these VIPs feel valued to
the company?
