If you’re buying an extended service plan for a new notebook, be sure to get a written statement detailing what’s included and not included.

Unfortunately, PC vendors won’t always tell you specifically what’s not included. Sometimes, you’ll only be able to surmise what’s missing by comparing written warranty statements from different PC vendors.

For example, most notebook vendors specifically exclude warranty claims arising from obvious neglect issues, such as spilling liquid on a notebook or dropping the notebook. Other notebook vendors, for a hefty price, may cover such calamities under limited circumstances.

Also consider whether you’ll be traveling with your notebook. Unlike your desktop PC, which likely will stay relatively stationary throughout its life cycle, your notebook probably will go on the road with you.

Some notebook vendors include international warranty coverage in the base price of the extended warranty. Others charge extra for this supplemental coverage. Regardless, if you travel abroad, be sure to ask about specifics.

Just as with a desktop PC, find out whether the notebook extended warranty is on-site, where the technician comes to you, or whether you’ll need to ship your notebook back to a service depot for warranty work. Also, ask about promised response times and estimated turnaround times.

Have you reviewed a price list of available notebook warranty upgrade options? Have you examined the related terms and conditions of what is and isn't covered under various warranty upgrade plans?

Does the notebook warranty limit coverage under certain circumstances? For example, while diagnosed hardware defects are almost always within the scope of the warranty, does the warranty cover accidentally spilling a drink on the notebook or accidentally dropping the notebook?

If you travel abroad with your notebook, is international coverage available? And if so, which countries and regions are included? Are there any differences in response times and coverage policies when seeking international warranty service on your notebook?

What is the promised and average response time and turnaround time for typical notebook warranty items? Are there any sanctions for the PC vendor falling short of promised response times?

Is notebook warranty service provided on-site, at your office, or do you need to bring or ship your notebook to a factory-authorized depot and wait for warranty repair?
