Warranty Services

Get the details on included and optional warranty services coverage before you make the purchase decision.

Nearly all PC hardware vendors provide some form of product warranty services. However, not all warranties are created equal.

Most reputable vendors stand behind their products, but each PC vendor seems to have a unique way of defining these commitments.

Although most warranty services policies provide for both parts and labor, on some items labor coverage may be completely irrelevant.

For example, if your mouse, keyboard or monitor needs replacement, the vendor simply will provide the part. In most cases, you won’t need a technician to visit to replace an external failed part.

Because of the high cost of dispatching a factory-trained technician to your office, PC vendors often try to get you to agree to perform your own parts replacement – even on internal components. (Say for example, a diskette or CD-RW drive fails on your desktop PC.)

In many cases, the PC vendor will overnight you the part to replace yourself, with the offer of phone support if you need assistance while replacing the failed part. If you’re squeamish about this prospect, ask about vendors policies now, instead of finding out during a system crisis.

Warranty Services Action Items

Can you get a copy of the included warranty statement and any optional coverage policies to review before you make your PC purchase decision?

How long is the warranty period?

Does the warranty cover parts, labor or both parts and labor?

Is the warranty services coverage on-site or return-to-depot (carry-in)?

What's the response time and turnaround time on warranty service?

Does the PC vendor try to pressure the customer to do their own service? If your PC vendor requests that you install component replacements under warranty coverage, what is your level of comfort performing these functions? (Be honest!)

Are there any geographic limitations to the on-site warranty services?
