selecting a modem by checking out the Microsoft Windows Hardware
Compatibility List (www.microsoft.com/hcl).

This free resource, among other things, lists
modem manufacturers, models and various degrees of compatibility and
certification across different versions of Microsoft Windows
operating systems.

Compatible Modems and Your Specific PC Hardware Combination
However, Microsoft’s Hardware Compatibility
List will not tell you about any compatibility problems
between a modem and specific PC brands and models.
But, if you have an extremely popular
desktop PC model, for example a Dell Dimension or a Compaq
Deskpro, some modem vendors will supply this compatibility
testing information either on their Web site or through their
technical support groups.
Tip:
If you cannot get decent information from a hardware vendor,
such as a modem manufacturer, before the purchase,
run fast, very fast to another vendor.

Do you have an inventory of the brand and
model of each modem that's installed in various PC systems
throughout your company?
For each installed modem, have you ever
checked the Microsoft Windows Hardware Compatibility List (HCL) at
www.microsoft.com/hcl to see which modems are compatible with
various versions of Microsoft Windows operating systems?
For each installed modem, have you ever checked the modem
manufacturer's Web site to see if compatibility information is
listed for your particular PC brand and model, as well as operating
system?
