Power Protection with Printers

Protect your printers from utility-induced electrical hazards.

Just like PCs and modems, your printers can get zapped or fried by power spikes and surges. You need to know how to properly guard against these risks.

Real Surge Protectors = Lifesavers

First, install business-grade surge protectors on all your printers. Don’t be fooled by power strips masquerading as surge protectors. Never plug a printer directly into an electrical outlet. There should always be a surge protector between the printer and the electrical outlet.

Avoiding Battery Backup Units

Just as crucial, don’t plug high-volume laser printers into battery backup units. If a power outage causes a paper jam, it won’t have anywhere near the impact on your small business as an unprotected desktop PC or server. Be sure to spend your battery backup (UPS) budget to properly protect what needs it most.

Even more relevant, high-volume laser printers generally draw as many amps as small photocopy machines or refrigerators. Thus, their power consumption will monopolize and overload small battery backup units – ultimately depriving the desktop PC or server of crucial battery backup resources.

So the general rule for printers: Always provide surge protection, but don’t worry about battery backup protection.
